Your very best meal
I had an interesting conversation around the dinner table recently – what’s the best meal you’ve ever had? Can you pick one? What made it the best? Was it only the food? How about the atmosphere? The company?
Personally, I think it has to be a combination. When I think about restaurants, my favorites are the ones that now only have great food but also have something else — a view, live music, a character of a bartender, an owner who always takes the time to come out and say hi.
I’m not sure I can come up with a “best” meal. But one of my favorites was at a tiny restaurant on a Sunday afternoon outdoors on the island of Murano. It was in October and we ate outside on a deck over the water. You could watch the boats private and public crashing back and forth through the water from Venice. We shared a bottle of crisp white wine and I ordered pasta that was black as night. Turns out it was made with squid ink. This was topped with local seafood in a delicate sauce. We must have sat for at least two hours, taking in the view and enjoying the breeze. Delightful and unforgettable.
